Catford Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy

Catford Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our cleaning activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety in connection with our carpet, upholstery, and hard floor cleaning services carried out in homes, offices, and commercial premises.

Policy Statement

Our aim is to prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing effective control measures. Health and safety considerations are integrated into our planning, decision making, and daily operations. We comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice applicable to professional cleaning services.

This policy is reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, technology, working practices, and the nature of work we undertake.

Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety within Catford Carpet Cleaning lies with the company management. Management is responsible for ensuring that adequate resources are provided to implement and maintain this policy, and for promoting a positive health and safety culture throughout the company.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring safe working practices on site, ensuring that staff follow the correct procedures, use equipment safely, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment. They must report and help investigate any accidents, incidents, or near misses and ensure that corrective actions are taken promptly.

All employees and contractors are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. They must cooperate with the company in implementing this policy, follow training and instructions given, and immediately report hazards, defects, or unsafe conditions to their supervisor or management.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before work starts at any property, appropriate risk assessments are carried out to identify potential hazards associated with our cleaning activities, the work environment, and any specific client requirements. These assessments cover, as a minimum, slips, trips, falls, manual handling, use of machinery, electrical equipment, chemical products, and interaction with building occupants.

Findings from the risk assessments are used to develop safe systems of work and method statements. Employees are briefed on the specific risks and safety controls for each contract or site. Work is only undertaken when it can be done safely and with appropriate controls in place.

Work areas are kept as tidy as possible, with hoses, leads, and equipment positioned to minimise trip hazards. Warning signs are used where appropriate, particularly when floors are damp or where cables cross walkways. Access routes and emergency exits are kept clear at all times.

Chemical Safety and COSHH

Catford Carpet Cleaning uses professional cleaning products that are suitable for carpets, upholstery, rugs, and floors. All substances are assessed in accordance with relevant control of substances regulations, and safety data information is made available to staff.

Employees receive training in the correct dilution, application, storage, and disposal of cleaning chemicals. Chemicals are always labelled correctly and kept in secure containers. They are never transferred into unmarked bottles. Products are stored safely in vehicles and on client premises to prevent spills, unauthorised access, or contamination.

Where necessary, ventilation is provided to reduce exposure to vapours or aerosols. Direct skin and eye contact with chemicals is avoided by the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.

Equipment Safety

All machinery and equipment used in our cleaning services, including vacuum cleaners, hot water extraction machines, rotary machines, and portable electrical tools, are maintained in a safe and serviceable condition. Regular inspections are carried out, and any defect or damage is reported immediately and taken out of use until repaired or replaced.

Electrical equipment is visually checked before use and used only with suitable power supplies and leads. Cables are routed to reduce the risk of trips or damage. Equipment is operated only by trained personnel who follow the manufacturer instructions and the company safe operating procedures.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means, Catford Carpet Cleaning provides staff with appropriate personal protective equipment. This may include gloves, eye protection, safety footwear, knee pads, masks, or other items depending on the task and risk assessment.

Employees are responsible for using the protective equipment provided, keeping it in good condition, and reporting any loss or damage. Replacement items are provided when necessary, and PPE must never be removed or ignored where its use is specified.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Manual handling tasks such as lifting, carrying, or moving machines, hoses, and chemical containers are assessed and, where possible, mechanical aids or team lifting are used. Employees receive guidance on safe lifting techniques, posture, and methods to avoid strain or injury.

Heavy items are stored and transported in a way that minimises physical effort and risk of musculoskeletal problems. Staff are encouraged to report any discomfort or symptoms early so that adjustments to work practices can be made.

Training, Information, and Supervision

All employees receive appropriate induction and ongoing training covering health and safety responsibilities, safe use of equipment, handling of chemicals, emergency procedures, and site-specific requirements. Refresher training is provided when procedures change or new equipment and products are introduced.

Supervision is proportionate to the level of risk and the experience of the staff member. New or less experienced employees are closely supervised until they are considered competent to work more independently.

Accidents, Incidents, and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents, and near misses are recorded and investigated to identify causes and implement corrective actions. First aid arrangements are in place, and staff know how to obtain assistance if required. Serious incidents are reported to the appropriate authorities where required by law.

Emergency procedures are communicated to staff, including fire evacuation routes, assembly points, and arrangements for contacting emergency services at client premises. Staff must familiarise themselves with local emergency procedures on each site and comply with any client-specific safety rules.

Consultation and Continuous Improvement

Catford Carpet Cleaning encourages feedback from employees, clients, and other stakeholders on health and safety matters. Concerns, suggestions, and observations are taken seriously and used to improve our systems and working practices.

Management reviews this health and safety policy regularly to ensure it remains effective and relevant to the services we provide. By working together, we aim to maintain a safe, professional, and responsible cleaning service across all the areas we serve.
